What is a tree trunk protector?
A tree trunk protector is a heavy-duty strap designed to protect trees when using them as an anchor point for winching. Instead of wrapping a winch cable directly around a tree (which can damage the bark and weaken the tree), the strap spreads the load evenly, minimising harm to the tree while providing a safe and secure anchor for vehicle recovery.
Can you use tree trunk protector as a snatch?
Yes. Unlike standard tree trunk protectors that are only designed for anchoring, the OPENROAD tree trunk protector is built with high load rating, so it can also be used as a straight recovery strap. This means it not only protects the tree when winching but also doubles as a reliable strap for vehicle recovery in off-road situations. (Note: it is not a kinetic/snatch strap and should not be used for high-speed recoveries.)
How to use a tree trunk protector?
1.Wrap the strap around the base of a strong tree, keeping it low and close to the ground.
2.Feed both looped ends of the strap into a bow shackle or soft shackle.
3.Attach your winch hook to the shackle.
4.Slowly tension the winch line until the strap is secure, making sure it sits flat against the tree without twists.
5.Always use a winch dampener on the line for added safety.

This method protects the tree by spreading the load across the strap while providing a safe, solid anchor point for recovery.
What safety tips should I follow when using a tree trunk protector?
Choose the right tree – Only use strong, healthy trees with a wide trunk as anchor points.
Wrap low and flat – Position the strap near the base of the tree, keeping it flat and untwisted.
Use rated shackles – Always connect with properly rated bow shackles or soft shackles.
Avoid kinetic use unless specified – Tree trunk protectors are generally for static pulls; only use for snatch recovery if the strap is rated for it.
Stay clear during operation – Keep people well away from the recovery line in case of failure.
Use a dampener – Place a winch blanket or recovery dampener over the winch line to reduce recoil risk.
What load rating does the tree trunk protector have?
The OPENROAD tree trunk protector has a breaking strength of 18,000 kg, making it one of the strongest options available for serious 4WD recovery. This heavy-duty rating ensures maximum safety and reliability when anchoring to trees or performing straight-line recoveries with a winch. Always stay within the rated capacity and avoid misuse to maintain safe operation.
