What is an awning?
An awning is a retractable shelter that attaches to the side or roof of your vehicle, providing shade and protection from the elements. Commonly used in camping, off-roading, and overlanding, awnings create instant outdoor living space — perfect for cooking, relaxing, or escaping the Aussie sun.

Will the free standing awning fit to my vehicle?
Yes — OPENROAD offers 180° and 270° awnings designed to fit most 4WDs, SUVs, utes and vans equipped with suitable roof racks or platforms.

Our universal mounting system supports:

Crossbars with or without T-slots

Always confirm rack load limits, mounting-point spacing and vehicle clearance before installation.
What’s the difference between a 270 and a 180 awning?
270 degree awning wraps around the side and rear of your vehicle, providing nearly full coverage — perfect for all-day shade and rear access. 180 degree awning covers just the side of the vehicle, making it lighter and more compact.

If you're looking for maximum shelter and plan to camp longer, go for the 270. For quick shade and lighter setups, the 180 does the job beautifully.
What’s the best awning for solo setup?
For solo travellers or quick shade stops, the OPENROAD 180° awning is the easiest option. It is lighter, more compact and can be set up by one person in minutes.

For wider wraparound coverage, the 270° freestanding awning can also be deployed solo using its swing-arm design. Allow a little more time and space for setup.
Will a rooftop tent affect fuel use or road noise?
Yes. A rooftop tent adds weight and aerodynamic drag, which can increase fuel use and wind noise. The difference depends on your vehicle, driving speed, roof-rack setup and the tent's profile.

Keep the tent fully closed and securely mounted while driving, and check all mounting hardware regularly. Removing the tent when it is not needed can reduce the impact.
